Cementing Additives
Cementing Confidence in HPHT Wells
High pressure, high temperature (HPHT) wells place extreme demands on cement delivery systems. Achieving effective zonal isolation while protecting the long term integrity of the wellbore requires both precision and durability. At the same time, the increased operational stress can significantly shorten equipment life if not properly managed.
TouGas chemical additives are designed for this exact environment—helping you deliver the well your client expects while protecting the value and longevity of your cementing assets.
The Cement Delivery System: Where HPHT Pushes the Limits
Even the simplest cement delivery system relies on multiple components working together:
- Product storage
- Cement mixing
- Pumping unit
- Casing
- Float shoe
- Annulus
In HPHT wells, elevated pressures and temperatures increase the load on every part of this system, amplifying the usual challenges of cement placement, flow control, and setting performance.
Chemical Solutions That Strengthen the Entire System
TouGas applies its chemistry expertise to support and protect each stage of cement delivery, helping you achieve reliable placement and long‑term well integrity.
Cement Spacer Surfactant
TouCEM TG CS creates effective separation between drilling mud and cement while removing residual mud from the wellbore and casing surfaces. As a water wetting agent, it promotes strong cement bonding—critical for dependable zonal isolation and well integrity.
Cement Dispersants
These additives reduce cement slurry viscosity, which is especially important in deep, long reach HPHT wells. High temperatures, pressures, and extended pump times can otherwise lead to premature cement thickening.
TouGas dispersants are available to suit a wide range of operational needs:
- Powder forms (31CP, 33CP) for reduced weight and long term storage
- Liquid form (31CL) for fast, precise application
- Temperature resistance up to 202°C (33CP)
- High temperature performance up to 232°C (31CP, 31CL), resisting thermal breakdown where conventional dispersants fail
Lower viscosity delivers system wide benefits, including:
- Faster, lower effort blending with reduced strain on mixing units
- Higher quality slurries with less trapped air
- Easier downhole flow requiring lower pumping capacity
- Reduced wear on pumps and longer asset life
- Ability to pump higher density, lower hydration cements with improved compressive strength and reduced shrinkage
- Lower and more consistent pumping pressures—critical where fracture pressure margins are tight
- Reduced risk of pressure spikes caused by turbulence or partial cement setting
- Faster, safer placement through narrow annuli and restricted float shoe clearances
Cement Retarder
In deep and extended wells, cement must remain pumpable long enough to reach the top of the annulus before setting. HPHT conditions accelerate setting while simultaneously increasing the distance cement must travel.
TouCEM TG 40R is active up to 210°C, allowing reliable placement in hot wells without compromising low temperature performance. It works across a wide range of cement densities and has minimal impact on compressive strength development.
Gas Migration Control
During cement setting, hydrostatic pressure initially prevents gas from entering the slurry. As the cement transitions from fluid to solid, this pressure decreases before a full structural seal is formed. In HPHT and gas prone formations, this can allow gas to migrate into the cement sheath, creating channels and fissures that:
- Compromise well integrity at completion
- Threaten zonal isolation
- Provide pathways for corrosive fluids, impacting long term well performance
TouCEM TG 10ACP bonds directly to cement grains, preventing gas migration during this critical transition period. Its benefits are greatest in gas prone formations and HPHT wells where extended setting times increase risk.
Fluid Loss Control
TouCEM TG 52FL forms a protective filter cake between the cement and the open hole, reducing water loss and minimizing formation damage. It is particularly effective in low and medium density cements with high water content, especially where high salinity drilling muds have been used.
